Pathogenicity in Plants

  • It’s not surprising that several diseases on plants are beginning to show up. We have had perfect weather conditions for disease to develop.
  • One of the most common diseases that we see every year is apple scab, and this year is no exception.
  • Many cultivars of apple and crabapple are susceptible to this disease. The leaves develop olive-colored blotches. These spots turn blackish, and the leaves eventually turn yellow and drop.

Plasmodesmata (singular, plasmodesma) are small channels that directly connect the cytoplasm of neighboring plant cells to each other, establishing living bridges between cells. Similar to the gap junctions found in animal cells, the plasmodesmata, which penetrate both the primary and secondary cell walls, allow certain molecules to pass directly from one cell to another and are important in cellular communication.

The use of DNA fingerprinting in criminal investigations is no longer a scene from the hit TV series CSI. In many countries, DNA fingerprinting is used as a tool in routine criminal investigations. DNA fingerprinting profiles of criminals are maintained in a centralized record system for easy identification of the suspects.

All plants contain molecular compounds called phytochemicals — “phyto” comes from the Greek word “phuton” meaning “plants.” Unlike vitamins, phytochemicals aren’t necessary for our survival, nor do they cause any diseases resulting from any deficiency. Their role in plants is to protect them from disease, injuries, insects, drought, excessive heat, ultraviolet rays, and poisons or pollutants in the air or soil...

Biochemistry studies molecules such as DNA, RNA and proteins. Blotting techniques are what scientists use to separate these types of molecules. In cells, they exist as a mixture. Blotting allows researchers to find one protein among many, like a needle in a haystack.

If you have multiple seeds to work with, and particularly if those seeds possess a high degree of phenotypic variation, you may wish to consider selecting certain individuals so that they can be kept as mothers, to provide cuttings for future crops for years in the future. To know more PS:
